Narrative Assessments of Korean School-aged Children with Cochlear Implantation
Pae So-Yeong

Abstract
Background & Objectives: Narrative assessment provides clinically important information on language abilities of school-aged children with language impairments. The purpose of this study is to compare the narrative-related ability of school-aged children with cochlear implantation (mean implant age = 6 years old) with that of typically developing (TD) peers.

Methods: Fifteen school-aged children (mean age of 9 years) with cochlear implantation (CI) participated in this study with 15 age-matched TD hearing children. Each child spontaneously narrated a frog story to the examiner, and the narrative was assessed in the areas of story grammars and cohesive devices. Language criteria, such as the Number of Different Words (NDW), Number of Total Words (NTW), Mean Length of Terminable units in words (MLTw), Mean Length of Terminable units in grammatical morphemes (MLTgm), and the Mean number of Dependent Clauses per Terminable Unit (MDCTU) were compared, as well.

Results: First, children with CI showed similar abilities in the total number of story grammars, event initiation, trial, and results. However, children with CI used internal responses more often than TD children, while TD children used backgrounds more often than children with CI. Second, children with CI revealed restrictive abilities in the use of cohesive devices in story production, especially in the connective markers involving predicates. Third, there were no differences between the two groups in the measures of NDW, NTW, or MLTw. In contrast, children with CI showed lower scores on the MLTgm and MDCTU than their TD peers.

Discussion & Conclusion: Korean school-aged children with CI are able to use story grammar with semantic information and syntactic length similarly to their peers. However, children with CI need to develop cohesive devices and grammatical morphemes more efficiently in narrative discourse.
